Umgang mit und Akzeptanz von Eltern bzgl. des Lebensstils des Kindes

1. Einstimmung:
What are the problems some children /teenagers face in their families?
What do you think would be an ideal relationship between children and parents?
You are going to listen to a song about a relationship between a parent and a child.

2. Fragen zum Verständnis
a) What does the parent allow the child to be or to do? (s. Strophe 2)
b) How will a parent judge a child? (Strophe 2)
c) How do some boys and girls behave as they are growing up? (Strophe 3)
d) Are the pictures of children growing up typical examples of “girls and boys” behaviour? What are the typical pictures?
e) What are you –according to the song- supposed to do/not supposed to do as a child growing up? (Strophe 3)

3. Weiterführende Fragen und Diskussion zum Thema bedingungslose Akzeptanz von Homosexualität. Folgende Fragen können diskutiert werden:
a) Do you think the behaviour of the parents is ideal? Would you want your parents to act in such a way? Would you want to give your children this kind of freedom? Can you imagine how this song could have a message for people who are neither parents, nor children?
b) No one sang the song to the singer. Why? What do you think the childhood of the singer was like?
c) This song was written by the Flirtations, a group of gay men. Does the fact that the writers of the song are gay matter? Does it change the message? Which values does this song convey? Which values are the basis for the way these parents raise their child? Which values are important in your family and for you personally? The parents tell their child to seek their own way and assure the child that they will be supportive. But are traditions not important? Are traditions important for you and in your own family? Are traditions rigid or can they allow leeway?
